Ralston & Associates began conducting hydrographic surveys in 1990. During the last six years, Ralston & Associates surveyed more than 100 miles on five major reservoirs as well as free-flowing river segments.

Ralston & Associates uses an 18' custom built, aluminum outboard jet boat which is ideally suited for shallow, rocky rivers and reservoirs. The 18' survey vessel is very stable and has ample capacity for a crew of five for conducting control and shoreline surveys. Ralston & Associates use Trimble Navigation, real-time, differentially corrected GPS and a survey grade depth sounder by Innerspace Technology, interfaced with a laptop computer running HYPACK Hydrographic Survey software from Coastal Oceanographics. RTK GPS  equipment is also available for more precise real time positioning.  Local professional land surveyors are contracted for primary control and shoreline surveying. A 23' workboat with an enclosed cabin is available for use when the shallow water capability of the jet boat is not required.

Gene Ralston has more than 15 years of experience as a whitewater powerboat operator and has boated most of the Snake River from Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Pasco, Washington. He has also had considerable experience as an operator on the ocean and rivers along the coast of Oregon and British Columbia.

Mr. Ralston's experience as an environmental scientist provides him with a unique perspective for conducting hydrographic surveying. Many of the surveys he has conducted support ongoing environmental studies related to fish habitat, wetland creation and restoration, sedimentation and water quality. Knowledge he has gained from many years of whitewater boating enable him to understand river and reservoir hydraulics.
